Birds of a Feather?

Birds of a Feather?

Birds of a feather flock together. It’s a saying we have heard most of our lives. But what does it really mean? People like people who are like them. That can be good or it can be bad.

As a parent, we know the dangers of our children hanging out with the “wrong crowd.” It can lead them to do things in their lives that can be very damaging and bring them down to a much lower level. The same is true of us as adults as well. What is the danger of us spending time with “the wrong crowd?”

“Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances.” (‭Proverbs‬ ‭11‬:‭14‬ MSG)

The Law of the Inner Circle states that our true success will lie within our immediate sphere of influence. We will rise or fall based on our closest relationships. Our inner circle of friends and confidantes should be those that give us most value.

As leaders in both our personal and professional lives, we grow in two ways. We grow by adding value to other people and we grow by others adding value to us. Our inner circle of friends and advisors should be carefully chosen for us to be able to both add value to and to receive value from.

Six years ago, there was a younger girl that came to work for me. As part of her training, I taught her about the Law of the Inner Circle and told her that her closest friends would influence her life the most. She had great ambitions, but the people she spent the most time with, that she called her “friends” had none. They were going nowhere.

The young girl quit her job after this teaching and stated that she was going to do great things and I was wrong. Now, six years later, we met again. This young lady was now in worse shape than she was six years ago.

Show me your friends and I’ll show your future. Your inner circle is paramount to your future.
